David Mathews of Carmarthen

Antique Welsh 30-hour longcase clock with brass dial by David Mathews of Carmarthen, circa 1790.

Little is known of David Mathews, although he is probably the maker of the same name who was recorded in Talley (near Llandeilo and is known to have made some fine clocks.

The oak case has a square hood with a bold cornice with broken dentil decoration and finely-turned pillars, above a trunk with a shaped door flanked by reeded canted corners, over a plain base.

The dial does not quite fit the door size; this can be the sign of a marriage, but is common on Welsh clocks of this period and may have been due to a misunderstanding between the clockmaker and casemaker.  The supports for the movement are themselves unusual.
