ANTIQUE WELSH BUREAUX .
FOR BOTH.THE
MODERN AND TRADITIONAL HOME

The desk was often owned by yeoman farmers in the 17th century, and their rapid spread meant that by the last quarter of the 18th century they had become common and appeared in many forms, often with quite individual proportions. The simple table-top versions continued to be produced, although without carving. Many early examples were found in Montgomeryshire, an elegant desk of c1730 from the border district, with an elaborate interior and having inlaid embellishments, being mounted on a stand. The one-piece bureau became the more usual form, with similar features to contemporary chests of drawers.

The base section has a fitted secretaire drawer with inset leather writing surface, over a pair of arched doors raised on turned legs.
A hidden drawer (in the form of a church offertory box) bears the pencil

The firm of Isaac Davies was a prolific furniture producer trading from Priory Street and King Street in Carmarthen from 1815.
Four other pieces by this firm see "Welsh Furniture 1250-1950" Chapter Six, where Fig 1174 shows a similar but less presitgious version in deal which originally had simulated mahogany graining.
